And a scary scary thing is how many people seem to be desperate enough to fall for this. The discernment within the Church need a serious reformation. It needs to be gutted and built again, cause it is a giant trash heap. I find solace in the fact that every leading Christian I know of is strongly rejecting this prediction (to call it a prophecy would demean that office).
Some co-workers were talking to me about it the other evening and asked me what the deal was with Camping. In my opinion, the guy simply has too much time on his hands. I mean, c'mon, did you see the mathematical equation he came up with to make this prediction? Crazy. I think if we Christians lived daily like we were anticipating a rapture, rather than show up a month before screaming :REPENT!, we might have a broader platform to speak into people's lives.
What many of these secular skeptics don't know is that Mr Camping had a similar prediction in 1994. It's really sad.
And the story is gonna get a lot sadder. This kind of "revelation" is unfortunately, common enough in our checkered history. The faith of many of Camping's followers will be all but leveled come Monday, and the credibility of Christianity will be further tarnished.
The saving grace of all this could be that there are crazies in all walks of life, from all belief systems. Christianity still has the potential for influence where it is active in genuine service rooted in love. We have little authority in someone's life whom we have not earned the respect of. And the best way to do that is unconditional love that contrasts the selfishness prevalent in our culture today.
As serious an offense as this one is, Jesus still loves Harold Camping, and lived, and died, and rose again for his redemption. I pray that on Monday he has the integrity to man up, take responsibility for his error, repent himself, and recommit himself to the One who still yearns for the reconciliation of a disinterested, indifferent world.
This isn't the first 'end of the world' prediction, and it surely won't be the last.
God Himself (and He alone) has fixed that date, and we are to live like it is today, everyday, giving our lives for this world as He gave His.
